Finasteride is the generic form of Propecia®.
Finasteride is the active ingredient in the generic name medication Propecia®. Finasteride is also a generic prescription drug and is also sold under the brand names Rogaine® and Avodart®. In the UK, finasteride is also sold in several other formulations – most recently in Propecia® tablets – along with a manufacturer’s prescription. In 2014, finasteride was found to be only for use when directed by a doctor.
A while back, a patient referred us to a chemist complained about the lack of generic finasteride in their medication. A doctor prescribed a generic finasteride as a treatment for hair loss.
The complaint was based on a patient who had had a prostate infection before starting the treatment with finasteride. However, before we can determine if this is a case where our healthcare provider should consider finasteride, we consulted a hair loss specialist. The specialist, Dr David Haywood, had prescribed finasteride to our patient as part of a hair loss treatment plan. Dr Haywood stated that our patient had a ‘reduced hair growth’ with the addition of finasteride – which is why we can only confirm that he had this treatment option for our patient. The specialist further states that our patient had a hair loss of 7.3 inches (average) and that his hairline was also reduced to 4.8 inches (average). The specialist further states that our patient had a ‘severe and progressive hair loss’ and that he would like to report this to the NHS. We have discussed this before and have made this clear to the NHS website: “Please contact the NHS if you have any concerns.” We hope that this information is helping to ensure that finasteride is used safely and effectively in the treatment of hair loss. If you have any further questions or need further advice about finasteride, please do not hesitate to get in contact with the NHS.
We would be grateful if the patient could tell us if they need further information on this medication.
Dr David Haywood:
We have just received our last consultation with a GP. We are sorry that we cannot prescribe this medication as a treatment option for hair loss.

Dr Haywood has also made this clear to the website: “The NHS website is now being updated with more information.” We hope that this information is helping to ensure that finasteride is used safely and effectively in the treatment of hair loss. If this information is helpful, we would be happy to update the website as well as the NHS website to ensure that finasteride is not the cause of the hair loss and is for the best. We will keep you up to date with the latest news, latest developments, and advice regarding finasteride use in the treatment of hair loss. If you have any further questions about finasteride use, please do not hesitate to contact the NHS website.
In June 2022, the FDA’s advisory committee on hair loss approved a hair loss treatment that included finasteride. However, like any medication, finasteride works on its own. The drug’s label advises consumers to use it as prescribed. Some studies have linked the drug to an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.
Finasteride has been linked to prostate cancer. It’s not clear why, but it is thought to work on an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. The FDA says finasteride can cause it to build up in the body. It could also cause the cancer to grow.
A study of finasteride in men who have been diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia found a 10-fold increased risk of developing an enlarged prostate, the same risk as men who were not taking the medication. Researchers also found that men who took finasteride had an 8-fold higher risk of developing prostate cancer.
The study, published in the journalN Engl J Med, was prompted by the rise in men taking finasteride and the possible link with benign prostatic hyperplasia. However, the research is still under review. The FDA says it’s not known for sure whether finasteride affects prostate cancer in men taking it, but it’s believed to cause the cancer.
Finasteride is the only FDA-approved drug for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia. The FDA says it’s not known if finasteride can affect prostate cancer or cause it to grow.
The drug is being developed as a treatment for hair loss in men. The drug is currently being studied for its ability to increase sperm count and improve semen quality in men with prostate cancer.

RefreshFinasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.
